Posted on Thursday, January 15 @ 00:00:00 PST by FatherTyme
Hey if you guys are ever wondering how to make the weeks go by quickly, just start being the interviewer for SETI news, having an interesting interview to turn in every single Thursday evening sure does make time fly. Maybe because it's so much fun! But it's people like this week's Featured Cruncher that make it fun... so if I may have the honor of introducing this week's Cruncher... Here he is, folks (dogs/cats)... MatthewTine (Stainmaster)! woooooo hooooooo (in my best redneck South Carolinian accent)!!
Nattiebo: So, MatthewTine? Give us some details about yourself? - Age, Sex, Student/Career?
MatthewTine:Matthew Tine, 33 , Male , Senior Security Officer
Nattiebo: Do you have any hobbies or interests other than computers?
MatthewTine: I love fishing and the outdoor life in the Great Aussie bush
Nattiebo: What kind of fish do you fish for down there??
MatthewTine:I love going after Shark(not the big ones) and anything else if it comes by and I don?t kill anything as I don?t eat fish so it is released.
Nattiebo: Are you a vegetarian or is it just the fish you don?t eat?
MatthewTine:I have never liked the taste of fish, I have only eaten it when I have lost a bet whilst fishing with friends.
Nattiebo: How did you get the name MatthewTine?
MatthewTine: My nickname Stainmaster was given to me after a night out with friends at Chinese restaurant
Nattiebo: So is it safe to say that you had a pleasant night that night?? Do they still use the name for you?
MatthewTine:Yes always have a great night with friends and it is my nickname in one circle of friends.
Nattiebo: When did you start running SETI?
MatthewTine: about 4 years ago.
Nattiebo: Where did you hear about SETI?
MatthewTine: On a television show and thought I would love to be a part of that.
Nattiebo: Wow a television show? What show might this be? An Australian one?
MatthewTine:I really cant remember but it was not a main feature just a passing comment.
Nattiebo: How did you find LWD?
MatthewTine: Someone sent me an email to join up and I thought why not.
Nattiebo: Where you crunching on your own or for another team prior to joining this team?
MatthewTine: No I was not with any body else.
Nattiebo: How many machines do you run now?
MatthewTine: 2 computers 24 hours a day
Nattiebo: Are you an overclocking "Freak" on your home boxen?
MatthewTine: I do push my machines but not to out of control.
Nattiebo: Do you use SETI Queue or any other add-ons?
MatthewTine: I use SETI Monitor.
Nattiebo: What do you hope to accomplish by running SETI?
MatthewTine: Making history in the search for other life.
Nattiebo: What would your ultimate SETI Crunching machine be?
MatthewTine: AMD?s Rock so the newest AMD out there would be great.
Nattiebo: Are both of your machines running on AMDs?
MatthewTine:yes my machine is an AMD 2400 and my spare machine is a 1300 AMD
Nattiebo: In very the near future, possibly as early as later this month, SETI will be ported over to the BOINC Platform, with Astropulse and the Southern Hemisphere Projects coming online shortly thereafter. Can we count on you to switch to one of those when the áeta test is over? Which?
MatthewTine: Not sure as yet but will look into it after the testing.
Nattiebo: Have you ever considered any number-crunching projects besides SETI?
MatthewTine:No not really at this stage but maybe later on when I buy some more computers
Nattiebo: Are there any certain people ahead of you at this point who you would like to catch up to before SETI comes to an end? (Are you secretly trying to pass anyone in the next few days/weeks? Spill your secrets!)
MatthewTine: No I do this for individual satisfaction, so don?t really care about catching others.
Nattiebo: Very good. Do you think that the recent landing on Mars will have any impact on the SETI project at all?
MatthewTine:One could hope that this new interest in possible life away from this planet will attract more people to crunch away at SETI.
Nattiebo: If you were head of SETI Marketing and wanted to launch a television ad, what would be your ?catch phrase? to appeal to current non-crunchers?
MatthewTine:I would focus on the current events like the missions to mars to catch the interest of the public.
Nattiebo: What does your significant other or other good friends and family think about SETI?
MatthewTine: They think it is a great idea as most of us want to find out what is out there.
Nattiebo: Are any of them crunching for SETI as well?
MatthewTine: My girlfriend used to but lately has not been doing any.
Nattiebo: Not doing any? Is she going to start up again or is it looking like a lost cause for SETI on her computer?
MatthewTine:No it is not looking good at the moment as the main reason is she has no internet at her house, But I will work on that :-P
Nattiebo: Have you had any success in recruiting people to LWD?
MatthewTine: Not as yet.
Nattiebo: If you could improve anything about the SETI@Home Project, what would it be?
MatthewTine: I have not found anything to be unhappy about yet so all is very good.
Nattiebo: What do you think the best thing is about LWD?
MatthewTine: The great information it has on the website.
Nattiebo: Well, thanks letting us get to know you a little better. Do you have any final comments (free reign here)?
MatthewTine: Seti&Home could be a chance in our lifetime to find out what is out there! And being part of that is very special as we are being part of the history making exercise. We can only hope that SETI continues for a long time to come.
